Understanding
your options.
Can I claim a Medicare rebate? +
Eligible people may access Medicare rebates under the Better Access initiative with a valid referral. This is commonly from a GP or prescribed medical practitioner managing a Mental Health Treatment Plan; some psychiatrist and paediatrician referral pathways also qualify. Provider and item eligibility need to be confirmed before booking. Read referral information.
Do I need a referral for a private appointment? +
Usually not. Private appointments can generally be self-funded without a GP referral. A referral is important if you wish to claim under a particular funded pathway.
Can I use private health insurance? +
Some extras policies include psychology benefits. Please check directly with your fund about recognised providers, limits, waiting periods and rebates, and confirm provider recognition with Aberius before booking. A Medicare rebate and private health insurance benefit cannot generally both be claimed for the same service.
What about DVA, EAP or other funded services? +
Third-party funded sessions are subject to specific approvals, eligibility and practice agreements. Please enquire rather than assuming these pathways are available.
